Way Basics Storage Cubes on A Startup Store

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

Cool Hunting recently wrote an article about A Startup Store. They mentioned that the current exhibition uses Way Basics storage cubes to display their collections.

Who would have thought that the storage cubes would match the classy and elegant exhibit displays they have?

Rachel Shechtman, retail consultant and founder of Cube Ventures, described the exhibit, “A Startup Store has the point of view of a magazine, but it changes like a gallery and it sells things like a store.”

zBoard: What’s the difference?

zBoard Recycled Paperboard

We often get asked what differentiates the zBoard from the particle board, MDF, plywood, and solid wood? Is it cardboard? Is it made from wood?

zBoards, are created through a patented, proprietary process that’s revolutionized paperboard manufacturing. Developing this process took more than 10 years, and it combines techniques of plywood craftsmanship, paperboard composition, and furniture manufacturing. It leads to extremely sturdy yet lightweight boards that hold up to plenty of use. Because we use recycled paper, no no trees were chopped down to producing zBoards. Since recycled paper is used, the process also uses  a lot less water than what is used to make virgin paper. Our purpose is to eliminate as much environmental impact as possible and offer a sustainable product. When you’re done with your Way Basics furniture (after its long lifetime), you can recycle it again by simply putting it in your recycling bin.

Is it strong, will it hold? Yes! zBoards are just as strong as other wood engineered boards like particle board or MDF. Watch this video to see zBoards in action.

zBoards are made on the beautiful island of Taiwan. Taiwan inherited advanced Japanese paper engineering and manufacturing processes enabling 74% of total paper production to come from recycled paper. Taiwan is also very eco conscious recycling 60% of paper used, compared to 50% here in the United States.

Way Basics at Apartment Therapy

Way Basics was proud to be included in Apartment Therapy’s Shopper’s Guide!

“When you’re looking for CHEAP — but not willing to throw all aesthetic consideration to the wind — this is the list for you. Here are 5 go-to sources for budget-friendly shelving and storage options for the design-minded organizer. Almost all of the units shown here are priced right around $100.”

“Exactly as the name implies, these shelving systems are way basic. Made from recycled paper, the zBoard furniture is exceptionally lightweight, sturdy and amazingly cheap — its downfall is that the weight limit is on the low side. I like the Madison Bookcase ($89.50) the best but their are fun, cheaper options like the Triple Rectangle Plus in Green($29.99). Strong enough for most uses, Way Basics are ideal for kids’ rooms, and nooks that you need some bonus shelving. As an added bonus, Way Basics are completely recyclable.”

Q & A with the Way Basics Cube

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

We got a chance to sit down with the most popular item at waybasics.com for an interview.  In this interview, the Cube talks all about how it came to be, what it’s made of and plans for the future.

WB: So Cube, what makes you so popular?

Cube: Well, I come in 9 different colors, you can accessorize me with storage baskets and decorate me with the new decals from Wall Candy and Wee Gallery.  Not to mention, I go great with all the other zBoard items.

WB: Very cool.  But what makes you so different from all the other Cubes out there?

Cube: Glad you asked.  For starters, I’m made of 99% recycled paper.

WB: Wow, really?  How’d you manage that!?  And what about the other 1%?

Cube: It’s true.  I’m actually made in Taiwan, which is much more advanced than the rest of the world in their paper manufacturing technology.  Necessity is the mother of all invention you know, and with resources in short supply in Taiwan, it’s important to make good use of the materials they have.  So here I am!  The other 1% is actually virgin paper.

WB: So why is that necessary?

Cube: Eco friendly ink is printed directly onto the virgin paper, and it’s made into the paper veneer that wraps my inner core.

WB: We’ve found that almost all household furniture contains MDF or particle board, which also contains VOCs and formaldehyde.  Please don’t tell me that you have that harmful stuff.

Cube: I’ve heard about that too, and worry not!  There’s no VOCs, formaldehyde, or ANY toxic materials in me.  I’ve actually undergone third party testing, so you can lay your worries to rest.  Many families are concerned with off gassing and other toxins being present, so I’m happy to say that you’ll get none of that nonsense with me.

WB:  Wheeew.. That’s a relief.  So there really isn’t any comparison is there?

Cube: You guessed it.  Now the only trick is gonna be finding some sunglasses that’ll fit my stylish self.

WB:  Well if that’s the only thing you have to worry about, life is good!  Any plans for the future?

Cube: The possibilities are endless you know.  My main goal is helping people to live simply.  With everything getting more and more complicated, I feel like we should slow things down and bring it back to the basics.

WB: Very true.  Well I’d say good luck, but I know you’re not gonna need it.  You might need a little luck with the shades though lol. Thanks for taking time out of your busy day to talk to us.  We really appreciate it.

Cube: Of course!  You know, if you have any other questions, I’m happy to answer any questions you might have.  Drop me a line at talktous[at]waybasics.com any time.

The World’s First Recycler 360

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Plastic bags, (gasp/eek/scream) I think not!  Cities such as San Francisco and Los Angeles (July 2010) have already or will be banning plastic bags with many other cities to follow suit.  In countries like Taiwan, you have to pay for a plastic bag.  If you don’t see for yourself, you don’t really know the plague of plastic bags in our landfills.  Way Basics visited Waste Management at their MURF facility (which is basically a transfer station for materials to be recycled or sent to the landfill) here in Irvine.  Check out these photos…

Piles of Trash1 Piles of Trash2 Piles of Trash3 Piles of Trash4

See all the plastic bags?!  This is too much!  All of this waste is being sent to the landfill.  According to the EPA, the average American produces 4.62 lbs of trash daily!  Compare that to the average 2.91 lbs generated by a European Union country.

Our creative designers have a fun, simple, solution—just like us!  Coming soon, the Way Basics Recycler 360!  The first of its kind— it shows recycling at its finest.  With the Recycler 360, the Way Basics design has been simplified even further— No more peel, stick, done.  Just open the box and slide the interlocking zBoards together—done! Why is it called the Recycler 360 you may ask?  It’s sustainably made from zBoards, which is used paper, so there is no added impact on the environment.

If you forget your reusable bag from home when you go grocery shopping (sometimes we do too), ask for a paper bag instead of plastic so you can use it for your Recycler 360.  We do, and we’re sure many of you also use paper grocery bags as a container for trash, newspaper, kitchen waste, you name it.  Isn’t it just plain and ugly though!?  Coupled with the Recycler 360, these paper grocery bags are the ideal liner for your recyclables (so instead of brown baggin’ it, we’re baggin’ the brown bag).

The Recycler 360 is ideal at home or in the office, where the recycling process begins with you—throw your recycled material in the Recycler 360 and when the bag is full, simply fold up the bag and toss it into your larger municipal recycling container where it will soon find its way to the recycling facility.

Watch your recyclables come full circle—all scrap paper that gets wrapped up and recycled has the potential to be used again and created into zBoards.  You can put other recyclables in it too for a  complete recycling center.

*Recycling tip:  When you recycle paper shreds or scrap paper, make sure to put it in a paper bag and fold the opening over onto itself a couple of times.  This tells the person at the recycling facility that there is recycling material inside (just a little something we picked up when we made our visit to the MURF).

It’s a perfect collection center for your plastic containers, many of which are recyclable.  It’s the perfect size for recycling in the bathroom too, where shampoo bottles, contact lens bottles, aerosol cans, empty laundry detergent bottles and even used deodorant can be recycled.  And since the recycling bin is almost always in the kitchen, these items are usually never recycled.  We can change that!

It starts with you…Consumer demand for recycled products drives the supply chain, and unless you (the consumer) demand more from your manufacturers, the products you seek will never come.  Do your part today to help.  Use the Recycler 360 and help garner the support we need to demand more from our manufacturers for recycled products.  Make sure to sign up for our Email Exclusives to find out when it will become available!  Also, make sure you’re a fan on Facebook to vote for your favorite colors and offer feedback!

Viva La Revolution!

The Benefits of using recycled paper are staggering! By choosing to purchase recycled paper products as opposed to products that use virgin paper fibers we are able to reduce: energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, particulate emissions, waste water, solid waste and wood consumption.

In a recent report by the Environmental Paper Network, it is estimated that 42% of the industrial wood harvest is used to make paper—a sobering fact given that forests store roughly 50 percent of all terrestrial carbon, making them one of our most important safeguards against climate change. Old-growth and mature, second-growth natural forests store much larger amounts of carbon than newly planted stands and once logged, require decades to recover the original amount of carbon they contained.

You have the power as a consumer to choose to purchase only recycled paper and recycled paper products—Viva la revolution!
